"To love what you do and feel that it makes a difference - -
what could be more fun?"

                                                  Katharine Graham

Contributing to the growth of teachers is the best way I know to keep my own life exciting and to make life better for students and all of us in the future. I relish the challenge of combining a love of content and children with the sciences of philosophy and learning, and the art and craft of fine pedagogy. In my classes we reflect upon who we are and why we choose to do what we do. We enlarge our perspectives on who and what it is we are teaching and we hone those skills and attitudes necessary to learn and teach well.

Meaningless tasks and boring busywork have no place in my classroom. I draw upon my years as a middle and high school teacher in Languageand Communication Arts and Special Education and my work withpracticing elementary education teachers to create a reality-based,constructivist learning experience for teacher candidates at Central.I am pleased to have been recognized across campus for teachingexcellence honors more than once, and I am an enthusiastic participantin CCSU's Teaching Excellence Forum.

Because collaboration multiplies possibilities and divideslabor, I truly enjoy working as a team member with other educatorsin the department and on campus. My favorite off-campus teamworkinvolves my connection to a wonderful school in Hartford, Connecticut:the NaylorSchool. As University Facilitator for this dynamic ProfessionalDevelopment School, I oversee CCSU student field experiences, supervise student teachers, engage in action research, participatein professional development with teacher candidates and schoolcolleagues, learn from and about children, and take part in theday-to-day life of students, families and teachers in a diverseurban learning community.

I can think of few things more satisfying than participatingwith caring colleagues in the growth and development of futureteachers. Therefore, I enjoy supervising teacher candidates ininternships, student teaching and field experiences as they makeconnections between theory and practice. I am committed to thediversification of the pools of teacher candidates and certifiedteachers. To that end, I have been instrumental in the inceptionof two recruitment, retention, research and education projects:The Dean's Leadership Institute and The Diversity Resource Group.Because I also believe that teachers have a responsibility tobe leaders, I have taken an active role in program/policy design, evaluation and long range planning in the School of Educationand Professional Studies, and in CCSU policy development throughparticipation in the campus-wide Graduate Studies Committee. Infall 1999, I began my first year as Coordinator of the Middleand Secondary Division within Teacher Education, and my secondyear as President of NEW, the faculty governance body of the Schoolof Education and Professional Studies at CCSU.
